Karwa Chauth Katha 2024: Celebrations, Rituals, and Traditions

Karwa Chauth, a significant festival celebrated by married Hindu women, is observed with great fervor and devotion. This year, the festival falls on October 20, 2024. The day is marked by fasting, prayers, and the telling of the Karwa Chauth Katha, a story that embodies love, devotion, and the bond between husband and wife.

Significance of Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth is celebrated by married women who pray for the long life and well-being of their husbands. The festival’s name is derived from ‘Karwa,’ meaning earthen pot, and ‘Chauth,’ referring to the fourth day of the month of Kartik in the Hindu calendar. The fast begins at sunrise and ends after offering prayers and sighting the moon.

The Karwa Chauth Katha

The Karwa Chauth Katha is an integral part of the festival’s rituals. It is a story that is recited during the evening prayers, highlighting the virtues of love, dedication, and faithfulness. The Katha has several versions, but the most popular ones are the tales of Queen Veeravati and the story of Karwa.

Queen Veeravati’s Story

Queen Veeravati was the only sister of seven loving brothers. After her marriage, she observed her first Karwa Chauth fast at her parents’ home. Unable to see their sister suffering from hunger and thirst, her brothers created a mirror in a pipal tree to trick her into believing that the moon had risen. She broke her fast only to receive the news that her husband had died. Distraught, she prayed to Goddess Parvati, who revealed the truth and asked her to complete the fast properly. Veeravati observed the fast again, and her husband was revived.

The Story of Karwa

Another tale involves Karwa, a devoted wife whose husband was caught by a crocodile while bathing in the river. Karwa prayed fervently to Yama, the god of death, to save her husband. Moved by her devotion, Yama sent the crocodile to hell and granted her husband a long life. This story symbolizes the power of a wife’s devotion and the blessings it can bring.

Rituals and Celebrations

The day begins with ‘Sargi,’ a pre-dawn meal prepared by the mother-in-law for the fasting woman. Sargi includes fruits, sweets, and other nutritious foods to sustain the day-long fast. Throughout the day, women refrain from eating or drinking and spend their time in prayer, dressing up in beautiful clothes, and applying mehndi.

Puja and Moonrise Timings

The evening puja is a significant part of Karwa Chauth. Women gather in groups, and the eldest woman narrates the Karwa Chauth Katha. They pass around a thali (plate) decorated with diyas (lamps), sweets, and a karwa filled with water. The fast is broken after sighting the moon, which is expected to rise at around 8:30 PM in most parts of India. Women look at the moon through a sieve, offer water, and break their fast by taking a sip of water and a bite of food from their husbands.

City-wise Moonrise Timings

Here are the moonrise timings for major cities in India:

  • Delhi: 8:25 PM
  • Mumbai: 8:30 PM
  • Kolkata: 8:15 PM
  • Chennai: 8:20 PM
  • Bangalore: 8:35 PM

Personal Stories and Traditions

Karwa Chauth is more than just a fast; it’s a day of bonding, love, and shared traditions. Many women share personal stories of how they celebrated their first Karwa Chauth or how their husbands surprised them with special gifts and gestures. Social media platforms are flooded with pictures and videos of couples celebrating this special day.

Celebrities and Karwa Chauth

Bollywood celebrities also join in the festivities, often sharing glimpses of their celebrations on social media. Anushka Sharma posted a picture of herself in a traditional red saree, while Deepika Padukone shared a video of the evening puja.

  • Rest: Take short breaks to rest and conserve energy.
